My old phone is dying and for a few days I am trying to figure out which should be the new phone I should buy. At the same time a friend of mine came up with the idea of an application which will make it possible for you to share data across multiple mobile devices. I was reading about openmoko as this is the first choice because it is free, then iPhone, HTC touch phone and then I stumbled upon GPhone.
What all you will need in a new generation device ?
Voice clarity,Good battery life, sturdy like good old Nokia 3310, iPhone like interface, lot of processing power, word processors and other office applications, GPS, adequate secure storage, ability to access information offline (something like Webaroo), few games, finally a camera as a least requirement. And I will be jumping up and down if the device has a GNU/Linux based OS and a free UI.
I was seriously considering HTC touch phone as it has GPS.
It is well known that Google has good expertise in GNU/Linux from day one. So gPhone is going to be GNU/Linux and Linux kernel based for sure. Now consider Google's primary UI. Its web based, sleek AJAX based interface. Considering the fact that Google has already done plenty of work for Mozilla's Firefox, they can come up with a device where the underlying display engine is Firefox / Mozilla engine and the UI is based on JavaScript based one.
Its obviously going to be fast. Consider YouOS and the recently launched AJAXWindows we can clearly see that the Ajax based interface can perform almost everything within a browser. You don't need Java, you don't need any windowing environments and more over Google doesn't have to build anything from scratch. They can reuse the existing APIs and come up with a sleek device.
Lets go back to my wish list. Lets ignore my first three considerations as they are purely dependent on the choice of hardware.
The only requirement is to come up with a touch interface. Google has already proved that they are pretty good at user friendly UI design.
GPS ? Who want GPS when Google can give you more ? Think about the possibilities of combining Google Maps and GPS. If you are in a location with network coverage, you can log into Google maps / earth services using your Google account. Combine that with GPS and what else you want ? Forget all the routes now you don't have to remember the route to office. Forget the traffic blocks. You will get live updates from Google about the route you have to take today and GPS will guide you.
Storage capacity means Google. You buy the gPhone , you will infinite, ever growing storage with it ! Connect to your own storage located in one of the state of the art Google data centers and you can access easily from any of the co-located servers. With Google's acquisition of security companies, your data is going to be secure and encrypted for sure.
Why do you think Google gears are for ? Store whatever relevant information you want on your device. Access it via Google gears. There is no need to come up with a data sharing application between mobiles. Google can come up with a service where we can create user groups and share whatever we want.
Games
Load Adobe flash engine into your gPhone and download the latest version of Doom written in Flex !
Assuming that the gPhone is going to be run on a GNU/Linux based system where Firefox does most of the UI jobs via JavaScript based interface, looks like the device is going to lighting fast and a good performer at the power consuming end.
Price
It seems in today's world people are botherd about features than price. And Google will be giving you a standard edition of every feature for free. The only thing you need is a Google account and you get all those Google services.
Hacking and cracking
Go to code.google.com and everything needed for a hacker is there and the hacker community will fight the crackers.
All this is based on assumptions but what if this is going to happen ? What will happen to all those mobile companies who had spend millions of dollars to develop UIs, applications, Java based games and what not. What will happen to companies like webaroo.
What about the privacy concerns explained here ?
gPhone is going to a killer device which will kill all other mobile devices ?
Well lets wait and see.

G-phone is not aimed at challenging existing feature rich phones .. The idea is purely business.. The phone I believe would be more functional as an electronic wallet if they integrate G-Pay
well why you are limiting it to G-Pay. Consider this.

the milk sarbath shop owner gets a message saying that ur on the way, and make a sarbath ready so that he can give surprise to Ajith when he comes.
And you get a MMS animation of MS ....
Its a win win situation for all the parties. You get ur MS without waiting,the MS guys get money and he become happy with the Google service and extends his G-notify service for one more year :)
